GILLYGALOO words by Michael Gorin

Oh, the gillygaloo is a very strange bird,
Who's seldom seen and seldom heard;
She lives way up on a mountain top,
And she loves to rock and she loves to bop....

Chorus
Do the gillygaloo, do the gillygaloo,
Do the gillygaloo with me;
We'll rock and bop 'til we drop,
Do the gillygaloo with me....

Her head is red and her tail is green,
With blue and orange in between;
Got purple circles 'round her nose,
With pink plaid wings with polka dot toes....

Well, she likes to climb where the cliffs are steep,
And she likes to swim where the water's deep;
She likes to fly in a hurricane,
'Cause danger is her middle name....

But the strangest thing about that bird,
And the weirdest thing I've ever heard;
When the gillygaloo lays her eggs up there,
Don't come out round, they come out square....

'Cause a square egg will not roll away,
While a round one hardly lasts a day;
When you're living on a slippery slope,
Where the unicorns roam with the jackalope....

DOWN IN THE VALLEY Source: Bessie Jones, Georgia Sea Islands

Chorus
Down in the valley, two by two,
My baby, two by two... my baby, two by two;
Down in the valley, two by two,
Rise, Sally, rise!

Jump like a jack rabbit, two by two,
My baby, two by two... my baby, two by two;
Jump like a jack rabbit, two by two,
Rise, Sally, rise!

LITTLE GREEN THING words & music by Shlomo Pestcoe

Chorus
I'm a little green thing and I just blew into town,
I'm a little green thing and I just blew into town;
I've got nine pairs of legs, so you know I can shake it down....

I come from a planet a million light years away,
I come from a planet a million light years away;
My saucer broke down, so I guess I'm here to stay....

I love to dance, I can boogie day and night,
I love to dance, I can boogie day and night;
With nine pairs of legs you know my dancing is out of sight....

Some call me an "alien," some call me "E.T.,"
Some call me an "alien," some call me "E.T.;"
I'm just a nice gal, so won't you be friends with me?

SWEET LEI ILIMA traditional Hawaiian song adapted and arranged by Shlomo Pestcoe

Sweet lei ilima, sweet lei ilima,
Oh, sweet and sweet,
Ke honi-honi aku;
Automobile-- vroom, vroom, vroom,
Ka'a bicycle-- holo aku holo mai,
We'he lulu ka makani…

Sweet lei lehua, sweet lei lehua,
Oh sweet and sweet,
Ke honi-honi aku;
Automobile-- vroom, vroom, vroom,
Ka'a bicycle-- holo aku holo mai,
Wehe lulu ka makani…

Rough translation:

Sweet lei necklaces made from the ilima and lehua flowers, they recall the fragrant scent of long ago.

The automobile goes "vroom!" And, like the aku (bonito, skip jack fish) running in the sea, the bicycle glides along into the distance with the gentle breeze…

BROOKLYN GIRLS (a parody of the Johnson Boys) words by Shlomo Pestcoe

From Williamsburg to Coney Island,
From Park Slope to Fort Greene;
Brooklyn girls are in the house,
The coolest girls you've ever seen....

Refrain
The coolest girls you've ever seen,
The coolest girls you've ever seen;
Brooklyn girls are in the house,
The coolest girls you've ever seen....

Brooklyn girls, red, brown, yellow,
Brooklyn girls, black & white;
Got the whole world in one borough,
Brooklyn girls, they hang tight…

Refrain
Brooklyn girls, they hang tight,
Brooklyn girls, they hang tight,
Got the whole world in one borough,
Brooklyn girls they hang tight....

Brooklyn girls they play soccer,
Dance ballet, hip-hop and swing;
Strum guitar, bow the fiddle,
Girls can do most anything....

Refrain
Girls can do most anything,
Girls can do most anything;
Strum guitar, bow the fiddle,
Girls can do most anything…

BLACK-EYED SUSIE traditional

Coffee grows on the white oak tree,
And the river flows with brandy;
The girls are sweet as they can be,
And the boys, like sugar candy....

Chorus
Hey, my black-eyed Susie,
Hey, my little black-eyed Susie;
Hey, my black-eyed Susie,
Hey…

THE SINGING ALPHABET Source: Mrs. May K. McCord, Springfield, MO, 1941

H, I, J, K, L, M,
N, O, P, Q, R , S, T,

First, there's U and then there's V,
Let the chorus ring 'em;

And that's the way to sing 'em!

CITY BUS words and music by Shlomo Pestcoe

Sun shines through my window, morning's come,
Gonna take a bus, go downtown, just to have some fun;
Have some fun, have some fun,
Gonna take a bus, go downtown, just to have some fun…

Chorus
Beep the horn as the wheels go 'round,
City bus, take me downtown;
Beep the horn as the wheels go 'round,
City bus, take me downtown…

Here comes the bus, down the avenue,
We'll hop on board, Mama, Papa and Grandma too;
And Grandma too, and Grandma too,
We'll hop on board, Mama, Papa and Grandma too…

Here comes the bus, down the avenue,
We'll hop on board, Mama, Papa and Grandma too;
And Grandma too, and Grandma too,
We'll hop on board, Mama, Papa and Grandma too....

Babies crying, kids giggle and laugh,
Look out the window, smile and wave to all the people we pass;
People we pass, people we pass,
Look out the window, smile and wave to all the people we pass…

HEY DIDDLE SWING words & music by Shlomo Pestcoe

Way up in Harlem every Saturday night,
Kitty Kat played the fiddle and she played it tight;
In a little club called "The Old Catnip,"
She fiddled her tunes and she made 'em rip.
All the other cats would purr and say,
"Yeah, saw that fiddle 'til the break of day!"

Chorus
Hey, diddle, diddle, (hey, diddle, diddle)
Kitty Kat on her fiddle; (Kitty Kat on her fiddle)
Bow that violin, make it sing,
Play a little rag and let it swing!

Kitty Kat was so cool when she played it hot,
She kept the house a rockin' around the clock;
All the hep cats tapped their paws to the beat,
And meowed, "Yeah, baby, ain't it sweet!"
I'll tell you straight, it ain't no jive,
She even made the bull dogs dip and dive!

There was an old cow who was passin' by,
She heard that fiddle and she peaked inside;
Ms. Cow spied Kitty on the big bandstand,
A rockin' and a boppin' on her fiddle so grand;
Got the rhythm in her hooves, and 'fore very soon,
That silly old cow jumped over the moon!

SALLY GO 'ROUND THE SUNSHINE traditional song, adapted and arranged by Suzi Shelton

Sally, go 'round the sunshine, Sally, go 'round the moon,

I said, "Now, Sally, dance around with me!"
"Now, Sally, dance around with me!"

THE MORE WE GET TOGETHER

The more we get together, together, together,
The more we get together, the happier we'll be,
For your friends are my friends, and my friends are yours,
The more we get together, the happier we'll be…

The more we sing together, together, together,
The more we sing together, the happier we'll be,
For your songs are my songs, and my songs are yours,
The more we sing together, the happier we'll be…

The more we clap together, together, together,
The more we clap together, the happier we'll be,
For your beat is my beat, and my beat is yours,
The more we clap together, the happier we'll be....

The more we dance together, together, together,
The more we dance together, the happier we'll be,
For your steps are my steps, and my steps are yours,
The more we dance together, the happier we'll be…

The more we get together, the happier we'll be,
For your friends are my friends, and my friends are yours,
The more we get together, the happier we'll be…
